The redesign of this 24 square-metre studio turns an awkward apartment with an overscaled kitchen into a clever city pad with generous living area and sleeping alcove.

Relocating the kitchen to the rear of the apartment where it backs onto the bathroom, utilised existing plumbing systems and cleared the space for a raised sleeping alcove (with under-bed storage) and a long living/dining zone in which the kitchen is a component, but doesn’t dominate. Bespoke detailed joinery turns every spare or wasted nook into beautiful storage or display space.

The whole ‘kit of parts’ is brought together around a sliding screen of hardwood battens that spans the length of the apartment. This floor-to-ceiling architectural element allows the occupant to effortlessly switch between day and night modes, screening either the bedroom or kitchen as it slides through the room. The original bathroom was reconfigured and now includes a walk-thorough in-built wardrobe, further maximising space.
